Blinding01:11

Blinding

2.5K
Blinding is a commonly used method of not telling participants which treatment a subject is receiving. Blinding is a critical part of a randomized control trial or RCT. It reduces the bias that affects the results. In an RCT, blinding is used in the form of a placebo. A placebo effect occurs when untreated subjects falsely believe they have received the treatment and report improved symptoms. A placebo or a dummy treatment is administered to subjects to negate the bias caused by such an effect.

Psychosurgery

97
Psychosurgery, the surgical alteration or permanent removal of brain tissue to alleviate severe psychological conditions, stands as one of the most radical and controversial treatments in the history of mental health care. Its development and application have evolved significantly, marked by dramatic shifts in scientific understanding and ethical perspectives.

Interpersonal Psychotherapy01:25

Interpersonal Psychotherapy

85
Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) is a structured, time-limited therapeutic approach initially developed to treat depression. It integrates key concepts from psychodynamic, humanistic, and cognitive-behavioral therapies, making it a uniquely eclectic framework. The therapy is rooted in the interpersonal theories of Adolph Meyer and Harry Stack Sullivan, as well as John Bowlby's attachment theory, and focuses on the interplay between interpersonal relationships and emotional well-being.

Ethics in Research01:56

Ethics in Research

23.5K
Today, scientists agree that good research is ethical in nature and is guided by a basic respect for human dignity and safety. However, this has not always been the case. Modern researchers must demonstrate that the research they perform is ethically sound.

Blind Procedures

Ideally, the people who observe and record the children’s behavior are unaware of who was assigned to the experimental or control group, in order to control for experimenter bias. Experimenter bias refers to the possibility that a researcher’s expectations might skew the results of the study. Remember, conducting an experiment requires a lot of planning, and the people involved in the research project have a vested interest in supporting their hypotheses. If the observers knew which...

Randomized Experiments01:13

Randomized Experiments

7.1K
The randomization process involves assigning study participants randomly to experimental or control groups based on their probability of being equally assigned. Randomization is meant to eliminate selection bias and balance known and unknown confounding factors so that the control group is similar to the treatment group as much as possible. A computer program and a random number generator can be used to assign participants to groups in a way that minimizes bias.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Informed Consent Research

Background:

  • Informed consent is crucial for psychotherapy but often inconsistently applied.
  • Current practices face challenges in validity and disclosure of potential negative effects, creating ethical dilemmas.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of a one-session optimized informed consent consultation.
  • To investigate if this optimized consultation improves patient understanding and decision-making in psychotherapy.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized controlled web-based trial involving 122 participants indicated for psychotherapy.
  • Participants were assigned to either a control group (information brochure) or an intervention group (optimized consultation).
  • Outcomes measured included treatment expectation, capacity to consent, decisional conflict, and motivation.

Main Results:

  • The trial received ethics approval and was prospectively registered.
  • Data collection was completed in December 2022, with analysis and publication planned for 2023.
  • Specific results on the efficacy of the optimized consultation are pending publication.

Conclusions:

  • An optimized informed consent consultation could fulfill ethical and legal requirements for psychotherapy.
  • This approach may enhance psychotherapy outcomes by improving patient expectations and fostering shared decision-making.
  • It has the potential to minimize negative side effects (nocebo effects) and strengthen patient autonomy.
