[Evoked brain potentials in various stages and forms of multiple sclerosis]

A series of 110 patients (61 females and 49 males) aged 15 to 57 years with the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS) of variable reliability were subjected to clinical examination and investigation of evoked potentials (EP) of the brain in response to acoustic and visual stimulation over time. The techniques of the examination are described. The control group consisted of 25 healthy subjects. Three types of quantitative changes of the recorded EP curves have been specified. The validity of the diagnosis has been found to correlate with the degree of brain EPs. The time-course of the clinical and electrophysiologic symptoms was compared between the subgroups of patients with an unreliable diagnosis of MS. The efficacy of this method in the early stages of MS development is emphasized.
