Gastrin in pituitary tumours.

L Bardram, J Lindholm, J F Rehfeld

    Acta Endocrinologica
    |July 1, 1987
    PubMed
    Summary

Gastrin was found in 12 of 87 pituitary adenomas, specifically in those producing ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone). These findings suggest corticotropic tumors may synthesize gastrin.

    Area of Science:

    • Endocrinology
    • Oncology
    • Molecular Biology

    Background:

    • Pituitary adenomas are common tumors affecting hormone secretion.
    • Gastrin's role in pituitary adenomas is not well understood.
    • Previous research has not extensively investigated gastrin presence in various pituitary adenoma types.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the presence and characteristics of gastrin in pituitary adenomas.
    • To determine if gastrin is associated with specific types of hormone-secreting pituitary tumors.
    • To explore the potential synthesis of gastrin by corticotropic tumors.

    Main Methods:

    • Analysis of 87 pituitary adenoma samples.
    • Measurement of gastrin concentrations using immunoassay techniques.
    • Characterization of gastrin forms within tumor tissues.

    Main Results:

    • Gastrin was detected in 12 out of 87 pituitary adenomas (13.8%).
    • Gastrin was exclusively found in tumors producing ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone).
    • Gastrin in these tumors appeared in smaller molecular forms compared to the normal pituitary.

    Conclusions:

    • Corticotropic pituitary tumors can synthesize and contain gastrin.
    • Gastrin may serve as a potential marker or byproduct in ACTH-producing pituitary adenomas.
    • Further research is warranted to elucidate the functional significance of gastrin in these tumors.
