Different traumatic experiences may distinguish risk for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Complex Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD). Sexual abuse and childhood physical abuse were linked to CPTSD, while natural disasters predicted PTSD.
Area of Science:
- Psychiatry
- Psychology
- Trauma Studies
Background:
- The International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) introduced distinct diagnoses for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Complex Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD).
- Both PTSD and CPTSD require exposure to a traumatic event for diagnosis.
- Understanding the differential impact of various trauma types is crucial for accurate diagnosis.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate if specific types of traumatic experiences differentiate risk for ICD-11 PTSD versus CPTSD.
- To identify unique trauma predictors for each disorder.
Main Methods:
- A sample of 158 trauma-exposed adults was assessed.
- The Life Events Checklist-Revised (LEC-R) measured trauma exposure.
- The International Trauma Questionnaire (ITQ) assessed risk for PTSD and CPTSD.
- Multinomial logistic regression analyzed trauma types as predictors.
Main Results:
- Childhood or adult sexual abuse was associated with both PTSD and CPTSD.
- Unwanted sexual experiences and childhood physical abuse predicted CPTSD over PTSD.
- Exposure to natural disasters predicted PTSD over CPTSD.
Conclusions:
- Specific traumatic events, including sexual trauma, childhood physical abuse, and natural disasters, may help differentiate between PTSD and CPTSD risk.
- Further research is needed to explore the nuanced relationship between trauma characteristics and diagnostic outcomes.
