This study found that factors linked to reward deficiency syndrome (RDS) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are associated with problematic sexual behavior (PSB). RDS factors appear closer to PSB than OCD.
Area of Science:
- Neuroscience
- Psychiatry
- Behavioral Science
Background:
- Problematic sexual behavior (PSB) is debated regarding its relation to addiction, impulse control, or compulsivity.
- Understanding the underlying mechanisms of PSB is crucial for effective interventions.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the association between PSB and addictive disorders (internet addiction, compulsive buying).
- To explore the relationship between PSB, reward deficiency syndrome (RDS), and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
Main Methods:
- Online questionnaires and Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interviews were administered to university students and postdoctoral fellows.
- Problematic sexual behavior (PSB) was assessed using the Sexual Addiction Screening Test-Revised Core and self-report.
- Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), internet addiction, compulsive buying, and childhood trauma were measured via self-report and clinical interviews.
Main Results:
- 12.18% of participants screened positive for PSB.
- OCD, attention deficit, internet addiction, family history of PSB, childhood trauma, compulsive buying, and male gender were associated with PSB.
- Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) clustered separately from other measures, with gender-specific patterns observed.
Conclusions:
- Factors associated with reward deficiency syndrome (RDS) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are linked to increased odds of problematic sexual behavior (PSB).
- Reward deficiency syndrome (RDS) factors appear more closely related to problematic sexual behavior (PSB) than obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
