Area of Science:

  • Dentistry
  • Implantology
  • Periodontology

Background:

  • A hopeless tooth with an attached pontic presented challenges for esthetic zone implant placement.
  • An amalgam tattoo from a prior apicoectomy complicated flap coverage for bone augmentation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the use of self-inflating soft tissue expanders for pre-augmentation soft tissue gain in implant dentistry.
  • To describe the management of an amalgam tattoo during esthetic zone implant reconstruction.

Main Methods:

  • Two Osmed hydrogel self-inflating soft tissue expanders were placed submucosally adjacent to an amalgam tattoo.
  • The amalgam tattoo was excised, the site augmented, and an implant with a crown and pontic was placed after expander removal.

Main Results:

  • One expander perforated the mucosa after 24 days, indicating potential for rapid tissue expansion.
  • Successful implant placement with a crown and pontic was achieved following tissue augmentation and tattoo removal.

Conclusions:

  • Self-inflating soft tissue expanders offer a viable method for pre-augmentation soft tissue management in the esthetic zone.
  • Addressing esthetic complications like amalgam tattoos is crucial for successful implant dentistry outcomes.
