    Background:

    • Alcoholism is associated with cognitive deficits.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate P3 event-related potential (ERP) differences between alcoholic subjects and controls during a Go/No-Go task.
    • To examine how stimulus characteristics (noise, probability) affect P3 responses in alcoholics.
    • To assess potential cognitive impairment in abstinent alcoholics via ERP measures.

    Main Methods:

    • Recorded P3 ERPs in 42 abstinent alcoholic subjects and 66 controls during two Go/No-Go tasks (Noise Task, Probability Task).
    • Stimuli were visually presented words instructing Go (PUSH) or No-Go (WAIT).
    • Tasks manipulated stimulus degradation (Noise Task) and probability (Probability Task).

    Main Results:

    • Alcoholic subjects exhibited significantly smaller P3 amplitudes compared to controls for Go stimuli in both tasks.
    • No significant difference in P3 amplitude was observed for No-Go stimuli between groups.
    • A trend towards delayed P3 latency was noted in alcoholics for Go stimuli in the Noise Task.

    Conclusions:

    • Reduced P3 amplitude to Go stimuli in alcoholics suggests impaired response selection or attention.
    • The findings indicate that cognitive processing deficits, particularly in response to relevant cues, are present in alcoholism.
    • P3 ERP alterations in alcoholics are comparable to those observed in other conditions associated with cognitive impairment.
