    Summary

    Coal miners have a nearly threefold increased risk of irregular opacities on chest X-rays, independent of age and smoking. These findings suggest a causal link between coal dust exposure and lung abnormalities.

    Background:

    • Irregular opacities on chest radiographs are a concern in occupational lung disease.
    • The relationship between coal mining and radiographic abnormalities requires further investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess the risk of irregular opacities on chest radiographs in coal miners compared to non-coal miners.
    • To investigate the association between coal work, smoking, age, and irregular opacities.

    Main Methods:

    • A cohort of 489 male coal industry workers and non-coal workers from England and Wales underwent chest radiography.
    • Occupational and smoking histories were collected via questionnaires.
    • Radiographs were assessed for irregular opacities using the International Labour Organization (ILO) 1980 classification by multiple readers.
