Research experiences help community college women in marine science build their science identity and clarify career goals. This study shows developing a professional identity is key for persistence in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields.
Area of Science:
- Marine Science
- STEM Education
Background:
- Research experience is crucial for developing science identity and persistence in STEM careers.
- Authentic research participation fosters a sense of belonging, recognition, interest, and competence in science.
Purpose of the Study:
- To examine science identity development in community college women participating in a marine science research experience.
- To explore how research experiences influence students' intentions, interests, perspectives, and career aspirations.
Main Methods:
- A 2-year study involving five community college women in marine science.
- Utilized interviews, surveys, identity artifacts, and significant circles for thematic analysis before and after the research experience.
Main Results:
- Research participation enhanced students' conceptual understanding of their scientific abilities.
- Students explored and clarified professional interests and career trajectories.
- Conceptualization of self as a science professional emerged as a significant component of identity.
Conclusions:
- Science research experiences are vital for fostering professional conceptualization and shaping student trajectories in STEM.
- Developing a professional identity and exploring career options are critical elements within research experiences.
- Further research is needed to fully understand the role of professional conceptualization in STEM career pathways.
