Auditory Pathway01:15

Auditory Pathway

5.6K
Auditory pathways constitute the complex neural circuits responsible for transmitting and interpreting auditory information from the peripheral auditory system to the brain. Sound waves are initially captured by the outer ear, funneled through the ear canal, and reach the tympanic membrane (eardrum). These vibrations are transmitted via the middle ear's ossicles to the inner ear's cochlea.
When viewed cross-sectionally, the cochlea reveals the scala vestibuli and scala tympani flanking...

Summary

Dopamine in the auditory striatum guides auditory decisions. Inhibiting dopamine pathways impairs choice performance in mice, revealing a key mechanism for auditory perception and decision-making.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Decision Neuroscience
  • Auditory Neuroscience

Background:

  • The auditory striatum, part of the basal ganglia, plays a role in transforming auditory stimuli into actions.
  • The dopaminergic modulation of the auditory striatum and its behavioral impact are not well understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the role of dopaminergic projections from the substantia nigra pars compacta to the auditory striatum in auditory decision-making.
  • To elucidate how dopamine influences sensory processing and behavioral choices in response to auditory stimuli.

Main Methods:

  • Optogenetic inhibition of dopaminergic projections in mice.
  • In vivo dopamine and calcium imaging in freely behaving mice.
  • Auditory frequency discrimination task.
  • Optogenetic and pharmacological inhibition of D1 receptors.

Main Results:

  • Inhibition of dopaminergic projections to the auditory striatum impaired choice performance but not movement.
  • Dopamine modulated striatal tone representations, with release inversely correlating to tone evidence strength.
  • D1 receptor inhibition in the auditory striatum reduced choice accuracy.

Conclusions:

  • The nigrostriatal system employs a phasic dopaminergic mechanism to regulate auditory decisions.
  • Dopamine modulates ongoing auditory perception, influencing choice performance.
  • This pathway is critical for linking auditory information to behavioral outcomes.
