    Background:

    • Spreading depression (SD) involves transient acid-base shifts in the brain's interstitial space.
    • Rat studies link these shifts to increased brain lactate.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the behavior of brain proton buffers during spreading depression.
    • To quantify rapid changes in bicarbonate and ammonia/ammonium ion concentrations.

    • Development of rapid-response gas-permeable membrane semimicroelectrodes for CO2 and ammonia.
