    Summary

    Monocyte function, including migration and phagocytosis, is impaired in women with benign breast conditions like fibroadenosis and fibroadenoma. This suggests an intrinsic cellular defect may play a role in the pathophysiology of these common breast diseases.

    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate monocyte function (migration, lysozyme production, phagocytosis) in patients with fibroadenosis and fibroadenoma.
    • To compare monocyte function in patients with benign breast disease to healthy controls.
    • To explore potential causes of altered monocyte function in benign breast disease.

    Main Methods:

    • Studied monocyte migration, lysozyme production, and phagocytosis.
    • Included 34 patients with fibroadenosis, 28 with fibroadenoma, and 48 healthy female controls.
