Spin–Spin Coupling Constant: Overview01:08

Spin–Spin Coupling Constant: Overview

991
In bromoethane, the three methyl protons are coupled to the two methylene protons that are three bonds away. In accordance with the n+1 rule, the signal from the methyl protons is split into three peaks with 1:2:1 relative intensities. The methylene protons appear as a quartet, with the relative intensities of 1:3:3:1.
Qualitatively, any spin plus-half nucleus polarizes the spins of its electrons to the minus-half state. Consequently, the paired electron in the hydrogen–carbon bond must...

Gyroscope: Precession01:24

Gyroscope: Precession

4.6K
Precession can be demonstrated effectively through a spinning top. If a spinning top is placed on a flat surface near the surface of the Earth at a vertical angle and is not spinning, it will fall over due to the force of gravity producing a torque acting on its center of mass. However, if the top is spinning on its axis, it precesses about the vertical direction, rather than topple over due to this torque. Precessional motion is a combination of a steady circular motion of the axis and the...

Atomic Nuclei: Larmor Precession Frequency

1.6K
The earth's gravitational field produces a 'twisting force' perpendicular to the angular momentum of a spinning mass (such as a spinning top) that causes the mass to 'wobble' around the gravitational field axis in a phenomenon called precession. Similarly, the magnetic moment (μ) of a spinning nucleus precesses due to an external magnetic field directed along the z-axis. The precession of the magnetic moment vector about the magnetic field is called Larmor precession,...

¹H NMR: Interpreting Distorted and Overlapping Signals

1.1K
Spin systems where the difference in chemical shifts of the coupled nuclei is greater than ten times J are called first-order spin systems. These nuclei are weakly coupled, and their chemical shifts and coupling constant can generally be estimated from the well-separated signals in the spectrum.
As Δν decreases and the signals move closer, the doublets appear increasingly distorted. The intensities of the inner lines increase at the cost of those of the outer lines as the signals are...

Gyroscope01:02

Gyroscope

3.4K
A gyroscope is defined as a spinning disk in which the axis of rotation is free to assume any orientation. When spinning, the orientation of the spin axis is unaffected by the orientation of the body that encloses it. The body or vehicle enclosing the gyroscope can be moved from place to place, while the orientation of the spin axis remains the same. This makes gyroscopes very useful in navigation, especially where magnetic compasses cannot be used, such as in crewed and crewless spacecraft,...

    Summary

Cylindrical vector beams (CVB) and cylindrical vector vortex beams (CVVB) show stable transmission in radial gradient-index (GRIN) fibers. Spin-orbit conversion and polarization changes were observed in CVVBs within these fibers.

    Area of Science:

    • Fiber Optics
    • Electromagnetism

    Background:

    • Cylindrical vector beams (CVB) and cylindrical vector vortex beams (CVVB) are advanced light beam types.
    • Radial gradient-index (GRIN) fibers offer unique light propagation properties.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To analyze the transmission characteristics of CVB and CVVB in radial GRIN fibers.
    • To investigate polarization changes and spin angular momentum (SAM) in CVVB.
    • To explore spin-orbit conversion phenomena.

    Main Methods:

    • Generalized Huygens-Fresnel principle for theoretical analysis.
    • Simulation of beam propagation and characteristics.
    • Analysis of polarization and spin angular momentum.
