Endoscopic Procedures III: Video Capsule Endoscopy

313
Capsule endoscopy, or wireless or video capsule endoscopy, is a diagnostic procedure for examining the entire gastrointestinal tract. Patients swallow a capsule about the size of a vitamin tablet. The capsule is equipped with a transmitter, a battery, an LED light source, and a color video camera to capture images throughout the gastrointestinal tract. This procedure is particularly useful for diagnosing conditions such as Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, tumors, polyps, ulcers,...

Area of Science:

  • Neurosurgery
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery
  • Vascular Surgery

Background:

  • Endoscopic techniques are emerging in neurosurgery.
  • Traditional open vascular neurosurgery has limitations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review selection criteria and best practices for endoscopic cerebrovascular surgery.
  • To highlight the role of purely endoscopic endonasal approaches.

Main Methods:

  • Review of current literature and surgical techniques.
  • Focus on purely endoscopic endonasal approaches for cerebrovascular pathologies.

Main Results:

  • Endoscopic endonasal approaches provide robust visualization and vascular control.
  • These approaches are suitable for well-selected pathologies, such as proximal circulation aneurysms.

Conclusions:

  • Endoscopic endonasal surgery requires significant multidisciplinary experience.
  • Advanced reconstruction techniques and specialized instruments are crucial for success in this novel approach.
