Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Hematology
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Primary vitreoretinal lymphoma (PVL) and central nervous system (CNS) lymphoma diagnosis is challenging.
  • Intraocular involvement necessitates vitreous biopsy for diagnosis.
  • Conventional methods like cytology and flow cytometry have limitations due to sparse and fragile malignant cells.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review current diagnostic modalities for intraocular lymphoma.
  • To emphasize emerging molecular techniques for improved diagnostic yield.

Main Methods:

  • Review of existing diagnostic tests for intraocular lymphoma.
  • Focus on cytologic evaluation, immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, cytokine analysis.
  • Exploration of novel molecular techniques.

Main Results:

  • Conventional methods are limited by paucicellular and fragile biopsy specimens.
  • Emerging molecular techniques show promise for enhanced diagnostic accuracy.
  • Timely and accurate diagnosis of intraocular lymphoma can be improved.

Conclusions:

  • Vitreous biopsy is crucial for diagnosing intraocular lymphoma.
  • Molecular techniques offer a promising advancement over conventional diagnostic methods.
  • Improved diagnostic strategies are needed for better patient outcomes in lymphoma.
