Background:

  • Problematic internet use (PIU) is a growing concern among adolescents.
  • Previous research on resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) in PIU has yielded inconsistent findings.
  • The triple-network model (default mode network [DMN], central executive network [CEN], salience network [SN]) is crucial for understanding brain function in PIU.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the neural substrates of PIU in adolescents using resting-state fMRI (rsFMRI).
  • To examine rsFC differences within and between the DMN, SN, and CEN in adolescents with PIU compared to controls.
  • To explore the correlation and mediation effects of personality traits and emotional/behavioral problems on rsFC in PIU.

Main Methods:

  • rsFMRI scans were conducted on 30 adolescents with PIU and 30 controls.
  • The Internet Addiction Test assessed PIU severity.
  • Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) and Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) evaluated personality and emotional/behavioral issues.

Main Results:

  • Adolescents with PIU exhibited higher rsFC between the left lateral prefrontal cortex (LPFC(L)) and left anterior insula (aIns(L)).
  • Lower rsFC was observed in PIU subjects between LPFC(L) and the medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC), and between LPFC(L) and the right lateral parietal cortex (LP(R)).
  • Emotional symptoms mediated the reduced rsFC between LPFC(L) and MPFC in the combined group.

Conclusions:

  • Dysfunctional attention switching and incentive salience, regulated by the SN, are implicated as neural correlates of PIU.
  • Emotional dysregulation associated with PIU partially explains these neural differences in adolescents.
  • Findings highlight the role of altered functional brain connectivity and emotional factors in adolescent PIU.
