A new smart steering sleeve (S3) system non-intrusively monitors driver health using electrodermal activity, electromyography, and hand pressure sensors. This technology enables continuous, convenient driver monitoring for enhanced safety and assistive vehicle controls.
Area of Science:
- Biomedical Engineering
- Human-Computer Interaction
- Automotive Safety
Background:
- Driving requires cognitive and motor skills that can decline with age or medical conditions.
- Continuous driver monitoring is crucial for safety and developing assistive technologies.
- Existing methods for monitoring driver biophysical and cognitive status are often intrusive or infrequent.
Purpose of the Study:
- To introduce a novel multi-modal smart steering sleeve (S3) system for non-intrusive driver monitoring.
- To integrate sensors for continuous measurement of physiological signals like electrodermal activity (EDA), electromyography (EMG), and hand pressure.
- To enable enhanced assistive vehicle controls and driver health monitoring through collected data.
Main Methods:
- Developed a flexible polymer substrate integrating low-cost interdigitated electrodes and a piezoresistive force sensor.
- Designed a sweat-sensing unit (SSU) for EDA, an EMG-sensing unit (EMGSU), and a force-sensing unit (FSU).
- Mounted the sensor suite on a steering wheel sleeve for easy installation in existing vehicles and developed a cloud-based data communication scheme.
Main Results:
- The S3 system successfully and non-intrusively measured electrodermal activity (EDA), electromyography (EMG), and hand pressure.
- Characterization demonstrated the sweat-sensing unit (SSU) operates at 100 Hz AC, EMG signals are amplified to 5 V, and the force-sensing unit (FSU) has a 25 N range.
- The add-on system provides convenient and wide-coverage driver monitoring capabilities.
Conclusions:
- The multi-modal smart steering sleeve (S3) is a viable solution for continuous, non-intrusive driver monitoring.
- The system's data can be leveraged for real-time driver health assessment and improved vehicle safety features.
- Future applications may include advanced driver-assistance systems and personalized driver health management.
