Ethical Issues

1.1K
Nurses are essential in patient care, upholding the ethical principles of their profession and effectively navigating ethical dilemmas. Neglecting ethical issues can lead to inadequate patient care, compromised therapeutic relationships, and moral distress among healthcare workers.

Ethical Dilemmas I

1.0K
Ethical dilemmas in nursing are of utmost importance, as they often arise from the tension between adhering to core ethical principles and the practical realities of healthcare delivery. These dilemmas require nurses to navigate complex situations where competing ethical considerations pull them in different directions.
Let us explore some examples to understand the potentially complex moral decisions nurses face.
Take the case of caring for minors, particularly in areas related to reproductive...

Bias in Epidemiological Studies

525
Biases can arise at various stages of research, from study design and data collection to analysis and interpretation. Recognizing and addressing these biases is essential to ensure the validity and reliability of epidemiological findings.Broadly speaking, biases in epidemiology fall into three main categories: selection bias, information bias, and confounding. A more detailed description of possible biases is:

Obedience01:08

Obedience

33.0K
According to obedience research, we may harm others under the forceful pressures of an authority figure (Milgram, 1974). How about if the inappropriate orders were delivered with less force? The increasing interdependence between nurses and physicians compelled Hofling and his colleagues to explore nurses’ reactions to a potentially harmful medical request made by the perceived authority figure, the doctor (Hofling, Brotzman, Dalrymple, Graves, & Pierce, 1966). In this situation,...

Rural Health Centers
Rural health centers are specialized care facilities in remote locations with very few medical personnel. The primary care providers who run the centers are mostly Registered Nurse Practitioners. Here, emergency treatment is provided to critically ill or injured patients before they are transferred to the closest hospital. Fortunately, due to advancement in technology, many rural healthcare facilities and professionals have easy access to diagnostic and treatment...

    Summary

Nursing home resident COVID-19 vaccination rates were higher in facilities with more White residents. Staff vaccination rates did not significantly differ by resident racial heterogeneity, indicating care disparities.

    Area of Science:

    • Public Health
    • Healthcare Disparities
    • Infectious Disease Epidemiology

    Background:

    • The COVID-19 pandemic disproportionately affected nursing home residents.
    • Vaccination is a key strategy to mitigate COVID-19 transmission and severity in long-term care facilities.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate if COVID-19 vaccination rates among nursing home residents and staff varied based on the racial composition of the facility.
    • To assess potential disparities in vaccination coverage linked to the proportion of White residents.

    Main Methods:

    • A cross-sectional study utilized data from the Medicare COVID-19 Nursing Home Database and LTCFocus.org.
    • General linear regression models analyzed the association between the proportion of White residents and vaccination status (resident and staff) as of June 13, 2021.

    Main Results:

    • Higher proportions of White residents in nursing homes were associated with significantly higher resident COVID-19 vaccination rates (85.65% vs. 72.74%).
    • No significant difference was observed in staff COVID-19 vaccination rates between facilities with the lowest and highest proportions of White residents (56.06% vs. 58.34%).

    Conclusions:

    • Higher resident vaccination rates in facilities with more White residents suggest persistent disparities in pandemic care quality.
    • These findings highlight the need to address inequities in healthcare access and vaccine uptake within nursing home populations.
