Background:

Wheelchair cushion selection is critical for maintaining tissue integrity.
Current classification methods for wheelchair cushions lack validity.
A systematic approach is needed to guide clinicians and users in choosing appropriate cushions.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop and validate a novel method for evaluating and classifying wheelchair cushion performance.
To assess cushion effectiveness in pressure redistribution for tissue integrity.
To improve the selection process for wheelchair cushions.

Main Methods:

Development of two anatomically-based buttock models (elastomeric shell, rigid substructure).
Definition of performance parameters: pressure magnitude and pressure redistribution.
Evaluation of ten wheelchair cushions using models and varying loads.

Main Results:

A classification matrix was proposed based on model and performance parameter data.
Two cushions demonstrated superior pressure redistribution performance.
One cushion exhibited inadequate performance for therapeutic use.
