    Summary

Actinomycosis is a rare, chronic suppurative infection caused by oral commensal bacteria, Actinomyces species. This anaerobic infection, often involving cervico-facial areas, is frequently associated with other bacteria.

    Area of Science:

    • Microbiology
    • Infectious Diseases
    • Otolaryngology

    Background:

    • Actinomycosis, a chronic suppurative infection, is caused by Actinomyces species, which are gram-positive, anaerobic filamentous bacteria commonly found as oral commensals.
    • The pathogenesis involves a symbiotic relationship with associated aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, creating an environment conducive to Actinomyces growth.

    Observation:

    • Actinomycosis is now considered a rare disease, infrequently discussed in otolaryngological literature.
    • The most common topographical localization is cervico-facial (55%), followed by abdomino-pelvic (20%) and pulmo-thoracic (15%).

    Findings:

    • Actinomyces species, particularly Actinomyces israelii, are the primary causative agents.
    • Associated microflora, including anaerobic streptococci, fusiform bacilli, and hemophilus species, play a crucial role in disease progression.

    Implications:

    • Understanding the symbiotic relationship between Actinomyces and associated bacteria is key to managing this rare infection.
    • The cervico-facial region is the most frequent site of actinomycosis, necessitating awareness in otolaryngological practice.
