Background:

Chief residents are senior leaders in residency programs, but their roles and selection vary.
Understanding chief resident responsibilities and selection is crucial for program development.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the responsibilities of chief residents in US dermatology programs.
To identify common methods used for selecting chief residents.
To assess program director satisfaction with the chief resident selection process.

Main Methods:

A Qualtrics survey was distributed to program directors of US dermatology residency programs.
Fifty-one program directors responded, providing data on chief resident roles and selection.
Data analysis focused on reported responsibilities, selection criteria, and satisfaction levels.

Main Results:

All surveyed programs utilized chief residents, with 35.3% designating all senior residents as chiefs.
Program director selection was the most frequent method (n=20), and helpfulness was the key attribute.
76% of programs offered other leadership roles for seniors; 86.9% provided additional chief resident benefits.

Conclusions:

Dermatology residency programs primarily select chief residents based on merit and program director input.
There is high perceived resident satisfaction with the chief resident selection process.
Most programs offer supplementary benefits and leadership opportunities for chief residents.
