Summary

Background:

  • Round nano-surface Ergonomix implants were developed to mitigate concerns associated with capsular contracture and textured breast implants.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the early clinical outcomes of breast reconstruction using round nano-surface Ergonomix implants.
  • To assess complication rates and patient satisfaction following this type of breast reconstruction.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective review of 212 patients (321 breasts) who underwent breast reconstruction with Ergonomix implants between June 2017 and December 2020.
  • Follow-up was at least 12 months, with data including demographics, surgical details, outcomes, and patient-reported satisfaction via Breast-Q questionnaires.

Main Results:

  • Major complications occurred in 6.5% of breasts, with 0.3% reconstruction failure. Higher complication rates were observed in immediate breast reconstruction, irradiated breasts, and smokers.
  • Capsular contracture was 0.9%, exclusively in irradiated breasts. Rippling was more frequent in pre-pectoral placements (9% vs 1.2%).
  • Patient satisfaction and physical well-being scores were high, despite a 6.5% rate of implant malposition.

Conclusions:

  • Round nano-surface Ergonomix implants are associated with low complication rates and high patient satisfaction in breast reconstruction.
  • The shift from macro-textured to nano-surface implants necessitates surgical technique adjustments and involves a learning curve for surgeons.
