Polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) can be associated with breast vasculitis, even without symptoms. This study found arteritis in breast tissue and temporal artery in a patient with breast cancer and PMR.

    Area of Science:

    • Rheumatology
    • Oncology
    • Vascular Medicine

    Background:

    • Polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) is an inflammatory condition often associated with giant cell arteritis.
    • Breast cancer is a common malignancy in elderly women.
    • Vasculitis, or inflammation of blood vessels, can occur in various systemic diseases.

    Observation:

    • A 79-year-old woman presented with symptoms suggestive of polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR).
    • The patient was also diagnosed with breast cancer.
    • Histopathologic examination revealed arteritis in both mastectomy tissue and a temporal artery specimen.

    Findings:

    • The arteritis in the breast tissue and temporal artery was asymptomatic prior to surgical intervention.
    • This case suggests a potential link between breast cancer, polymyalgia rheumatica, and vasculitis.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Review of previous literature indicates breast vasculitis may be underdiagnosed in PMR patients.
  • Implications:

    • Increased awareness of breast vasculitis in patients with polymyalgia rheumatica and breast cancer is warranted.
    • Further research is needed to elucidate the relationship between these conditions.
    • This finding may impact diagnostic and treatment strategies for patients presenting with overlapping symptoms.
