Summary

Computed tomography (CT)-guided localization of multiple lung nodules (MLNs) is safe and effective. While it takes longer and has more complications than single lung nodule (SLN) localization, it achieves similar success rates.

Area of Science:

  • Pulmonology
  • Radiology
  • Interventional Oncology

Background:

  • Multiple lung nodules (MLNs) affect approximately 20% of patients requiring lung nodule localization.
  • Accurate localization is crucial for minimally invasive treatment of lung nodules.

Approach:

  • A meta-analysis was conducted using data from seven studies published up to February 2022.
  • Searched databases included PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library.
  • RevMan v5.3 software was used for the meta-analysis.

Key Points:

  • No significant difference in successful localization rates between MLNs and SLNs.
  • MLN localization had significantly longer procedural times (p<0.00001).
  • MLN localization showed significantly higher rates of pneumothorax and lung hemorrhage (p<0.00001).

Conclusions:

  • CT-guided simultaneous MLN localization is a clinically safe and effective procedure.
  • The procedure is associated with increased procedural time and complication rates compared to SLN localization.
  • Despite potential drawbacks, MLN localization offers a viable option for patients with multiple lung nodules.
