Abstract:
Retraction: "Effects of IGFBP3 gene silencing mediated inhibition of ERK/MAPK signaling pathway on proliferation, apoptosis, autophagy, and cell senescence in rats nucleus pulposus cells," by Gang Chen, Xiaopeng Zhou, and Zhengkuan Xu, J Cell Physiol. 2019; 9308-9315: The above article, published online on 28 October 2018 in Wiley Online Library (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/jcp.27613), and a corrsponding Erratum, published online on 6 May 2019 (https://doi.org/10.1002/jcp.28675) have been retracted by agreement between the authors, the journal's Editor in Chief, Prof. Dr. Gregg Fields, and Wiley Periodicals LLC. The retraction has been agreed after the authors stated that the experimental data in the article could not be verified. The investigation additionally revealed duplication in several image elements. Thus, the editors consider the conclusions of this article to be invalid. The authors were not available for a final confirmation of the retraction.
Insights
This study on nucleus pulposus cells has been retracted due to unverified experimental data and duplicated images. The findings regarding IGFBP3 gene silencing and the ERK/MAPK pathway are considered invalid.
Area of Science:
- Cell Biology
- Molecular Biology
- Biochemistry
Context:
- The study investigated the role of Insulin-like Growth Factor Binding Protein 3 (IGFBP3) gene silencing.
- Focus was on the Extracellular signal-Regulated Kinase/Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase (ERK/MAPK) signaling pathway.
- Research involved nucleus pulposus cells from rats.
Purpose:
- To examine the effects of IGFBP3 gene silencing on cell proliferation, apoptosis, autophagy, and senescence.
- To understand the impact on the ERK/MAPK signaling pathway in rat nucleus pulposus cells.
Summary:
- The article "Effects of IGFBP3 gene silencing mediated inhibition of ERK/MAPK signaling pathway on proliferation, apoptosis, autophagy, and cell senescence in rats nucleus pulposus cells" has been retracted.
- Retraction was based on the authors' inability to verify experimental data and the discovery of duplicated image elements.
- The journal editors deemed the study's conclusions invalid due to these issues.
Impact:
- The retraction invalidates any conclusions drawn from the original publication.
- This highlights the importance of data integrity and verification in scientific publishing.
- Researchers should be aware that the findings related to IGFBP3, ERK/MAPK signaling, and nucleus pulposus cell behavior in this specific study are not scientifically supported.
