Summary

Long-term exposure to greenspace, measured by the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), is linked to reduced poststroke disability. Higher greenspace is associated with better functional outcomes for stroke survivors.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the relationship between long-term greenspace exposure and poststroke disability.
  • To assess the impact of greenspace on functional recovery after stroke.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized longitudinal data from the China National Stroke Screening Survey (2013-2019).
  • Included 28,085 stroke survivors with at least two visits.
  • Assessed greenspace using a 3-year average Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and green land cover proportion.
  • Measured poststroke functional status using the modified Ranking Score (mRS), with >2 indicating disability.
  • Employed fixed effects regressions to analyze associations.

Main Results:

  • Each 0.05 increase in NDVI correlated with a 0.056-unit decrease in mRS score.
  • Higher NDVI was associated with a 46.6% lower risk of poststroke disability.
  • Non-linear relationships were observed between NDVI and mRS score/disability.
  • Increased proportions of grasslands, savannas, and forests showed inverse associations with mRS scores.

Conclusions:

  • Increased greenspace exposure is inversely associated with modified Ranking Score (mRS) in stroke survivors.
  • Greenspace planning may serve as a valuable intervention to mitigate poststroke disability.
