    Summary

This study compared diazepam and midazolam for intravenous sedation in dental surgery. Midazolam provided better amnesia and fewer venous complications than diazepam.

    Area of Science:

    • Anesthesiology
    • Pharmacology

    Background:

    • Intravenous sedation is frequently used in dental surgery.
    • Diazepam and midazolam are commonly used sedatives.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the efficacy and safety of diazepam-fentanyl versus midazolam-fentanyl for intravenous sedation in dental procedures.
    • To evaluate cardiovascular effects, anterograde amnesia, and venous sequelae.

    Main Methods:

    • A comparative study involving 180 patients undergoing dental surgery.
    • 120 patients received diazepam and fentanyl.
    • 60 patients received midazolam and fentanyl.

    Main Results:

    • Both sedation regimens were safe and effective.
    • The diazepam group experienced more adverse venous sequelae.
    • The midazolam group demonstrated superior anterograde amnesia and had no venous sequelae.

    Conclusions:

    • Midazolam-fentanyl is a preferable sedation option in dental surgery due to improved amnesia and reduced venous complications.
    • Both diazepam and midazolam offer acceptable sedation, but midazolam presents a better safety profile regarding venous sequelae.
