The Cochlea01:13

The Cochlea

45.7K
The cochlea is a coiled structure in the inner ear that contains hair cells—the sensory receptors of the auditory system. Sound waves are transmitted to the cochlea by small bones attached to the eardrum called the ossicles, which vibrate the oval window that leads to the inner ear. This causes fluid in the chambers of the cochlea to move, vibrating the basilar membrane.

Area of Science:

  • Audiology
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Neurosurgery

Background:

  • The Cochlear™ Osia® 2 System is an active transcutaneous bone-anchored hearing implant.
  • It features a novel piezoelectric transducer attached to a titanium implant (BI300).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the surgical placement of the Cochlear™ Osia® 2 System.
  • To highlight its application in treating conductive or mixed hearing loss and single-sided deafness.

Main Methods:

  • Utilizes digital piezoelectric stimulation to bypass damaged auditory pathways.
  • Sound is transmitted directly to the cochlea via the implant.

Main Results:

  • Demonstrates a step-by-step surgical procedure for implant placement.
  • The piezoelectric actuator is anchored to the mastoid bone using an osseointegrated screw.

Conclusions:

  • The study provides a procedural guide for the Cochlear™ Osia® 2 System.
  • This active transcutaneous bone conduction implant offers a new solution for specific hearing loss types.
