    Summary

    Chronic imipramine administration in rats reduced motor activity and grooming behaviors. However, this antidepressant did not affect their curiosity towards novel environments, regardless of social housing conditions.

    Background:

    • Social isolation and antidepressant treatments can influence animal behavior.
    • Imipramine is a commonly used antidepressant with known effects on neurotransmitter systems.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effects of chronic imipramine administration on exploratory behavior and motor activity in rats.
    • To examine potential interactions between social housing conditions and imipramine treatment on behavior.

    Main Methods:

    • Hooded rats were either group-housed or socially isolated from weaning.
    • Rats received daily intraperitoneal injections of saline, 10 mg/kg, or 20 mg/kg imipramine HCl for 15 days.
    • Behavioral assessments included novelty choices, rearing, grooming, and exploration in an open field.

    Main Results:

    • Imipramine reduced rearing and ambulation across all groups.
    • Grooming was reduced by imipramine, particularly in socially isolated rats.
    • No significant effect of imipramine on novelty choices was observed.
    • Weight loss occurred with the higher imipramine dose and in male rats subjected to social isolation.

    Conclusions:

    • Chronic imipramine exhibits a sedative effect on motor activity in rats.
    • Despite motor effects, imipramine does not alter the exploration of novel environments.
    • Social housing conditions did not significantly interact with imipramine's effects on exploratory behavior.
