  • To investigate attitudinal differences among RTs in British Columbia regarding challenges in acute versus community care settings.

  • An anonymous online survey was distributed to members of the British Columbia Society of Respiratory Therapists.
  • 197 RTs responded, with 117 in acute care, 53 in community settings, and 27 in other roles.
  • Survey data focused on perceived challenges across various domains.

Main Results:

  • Statistically significant differences (P ≤ 0.05) in stress and interpersonal challenges were observed between acute and community care settings.
  • Acute care settings reported higher challenges in technology, stress, inter-professional collaboration, and training.
  • Community settings reported higher challenges in independence and education, while both settings reported similar issues in problem-solving, communication, and resource management.

Conclusions:

  • Work setting influences RTs' attitudes towards stress and interpersonal challenges.
  • Neither setting is universally more challenging; each presents distinct difficulties.
  • Acute care RTs face more technology, inter-professional, and training challenges, while community RTs face more independence and education challenges.
