  • Identified and categorized five key EHR-driven recruitment strategies.

  • Five key EHR-driven recruitment strategies were identified: direct to patient messages, candidate lists for mailings/calls, direct to research alerts, point of care alerts, and participant registries.
  • Candidate lists for mailings/calls were the most frequently recommended strategy.
  • Participant registries were least frequently recommended.
  • For some studies, no EHR-driven recruitment was advised.

Conclusions:

  • A structured approach and decision matrix can guide the selection of EHR-driven recruitment strategies.
  • The optimal strategy depends on study-specific factors.
  • Further comparative effectiveness research is needed to refine EHR recruitment methods.
