A new polyamide wax (TQ-1) was developed to enhance oil-based drilling fluids (OBDFs). TQ-1 improves rheological properties, emulsion stability, and hole cleaning ability, addressing common OBDF challenges.
Area of Science:
- Materials Science
- Petroleum Engineering
- Chemical Engineering
Background:
- Oil-based drilling fluids (OBDFs) are crucial in oil and gas exploration.
- Common issues with OBDFs include poor cutting transport and low yield point.
- Enhancing OBDF performance is vital for efficient and safe drilling operations.
Purpose of the Study:
- To synthesize and evaluate a novel polyamide wax (TQ-1) for improving OBDFs.
- To investigate the impact of TQ-1 on the stability and rheological properties of water-in-oil emulsions.
- To assess the overall performance enhancement of OBDFs with TQ-1 addition.
Main Methods:
- Synthesis of polyamide wax (TQ-1) from dimeric acid and 1,6-hexanediamine.
- Characterization of TQ-1 using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA).
- Evaluation of emulsion stability (sedimentation, stability index, electrical stability, particle size) and rheological properties (viscosity, thixotropy).
Main Results:
- TQ-1 exhibited good thermal stability with an initial decomposition temperature of 195 °C.
- Addition of TQ-1 enhanced emulsion stability, increased demulsification voltage, and improved shear thinning and thixotropy.
- TQ-1 significantly improved yield point and gel strength, while reducing the sedimentation factor in OBDFs.
Conclusions:
- Polyamide wax (TQ-1) effectively strengthens the weak gel structure of OBDFs.
- TQ-1 demonstrates excellent thermal stability and compatibility with OBDFs.
- The study confirms TQ-1's potential to overcome key limitations of traditional OBDFs, improving drilling efficiency.
