Bipolar Disorder01:30

Bipolar Disorder

124
Bipolar disorder is a chronic mental health condition marked by significant mood fluctuations, including episodes of mania and depression. Elevated energy levels, heightened mood or irritability, impulsive behavior, reduced sleep needs, rapid speech, racing thoughts, inflated self-esteem, and distractibility characterize mania. Individuals with bipolar disorder often alternate between depressive and manic states, with periods of emotional stability lasting an average of six months to a year.

Traits and States01:17

Traits and States

294
Personality traits represent consistent patterns in behavior, thoughts, and emotions, reflecting an individual's tendencies across various situations. For example, extraversion, a well-known trait, manifests in individuals as talkative, energetic, and enthusiastic behaviors. These traits are stable over time, offering a reliable framework for predicting how people might act in different contexts. However, they do not define every moment of an individual's life. In contrast to traits,...

Borderline Personality Disorder01:25

Borderline Personality Disorder

132
Borderline Personality Disorder is a complex and multifaceted mental health condition characterized by pervasive instability in interpersonal relationships, self-image, emotions, and impulse control. This instability manifests in extreme emotional reactions, fear of abandonment, and self-destructive behaviors. The disorder significantly impacts daily functioning, often leading to distress in both personal and professional domains.

Trait and State Self-Esteem

10.9K
The term self-esteem is often used generically, to refer to how people feel about themselves. However, according to research, there are three distinct constructs that should not be used interchangeably (Brown & Marshall, 2006).

Traits, Mood, and Subjective Wellbeing01:22

Traits, Mood, and Subjective Wellbeing

116
Subjective well-being (SWB) refers to an individual's self-evaluation of their overall life satisfaction, happiness, and fulfillment. This multifaceted construct is typically assessed by analyzing the balance of positive and negative emotions alongside perceptions of life satisfaction. Personality traits such as neuroticism and extraversion are strongly associated with variations in SWB, offering critical insights into the underlying mechanisms of emotional well-being.

Personality Disorders: Dependent and Obsessive-Compulsive

123
Dependent personality disorder and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder are two separate psychological conditions that influence behavior, relationships, and overall life functioning. Though both involve maladaptive behaviors, their core characteristics and motivations differ significantly.
 Dependent Personality Disorder
Dependent personality disorder is characterized by an excessive reliance on others to manage various aspects of life. Individuals with this disorder often struggle...

Summary

Impulsivity may be a core feature of bipolar disorder (BD), even when symptoms are not active. This review found higher impulsivity in euthymic BD patients compared to healthy individuals.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Neuroscience
  • Clinical Psychology

Background:

  • Impulsive behavior is a hallmark of mania in bipolar disorder (BD).
  • Evidence is mixed regarding whether impulsivity is a trait feature of BD, persisting in the euthymic state.
  • Understanding trait impulsivity is crucial for identifying potential therapeutic targets in BD.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review and meta-analyze existing research on impulsivity levels in euthymic individuals with BD compared to healthy controls.
  • To determine if impulsivity is an enduring characteristic of bipolar disorder.

Main Methods:

  • A systematic literature search was conducted on electronic databases up to April 2022.
  • Included studies reported self-report or behavioral impulsivity measures in euthymic BD patients and healthy controls.
  • Data from 46 identified studies were analyzed using meta-analysis.

Main Results:

  • Euthymic individuals with BD exhibited significantly higher self-reported impulsivity compared to controls (large effect size).
  • Elevated impulsivity was also observed in BD groups on response inhibition (moderate effect size) and inattention tasks (large effect size).
  • No significant differences were found in delay of gratification tasks between groups.

Conclusions:

  • The findings suggest that impulsivity may be a trait feature of bipolar disorder.
  • Longitudinal studies are needed to confirm if elevated impulsivity predates the onset of BD.
  • Future research should explore the efficacy of cognitive interventions for managing impulsivity in BD.
