Swedish high-risk study: sample characteristics at age 6.

T F McNeil, L Kaij

    Summary

Children of mothers with psychosis face higher risks for mental disturbance. Early life factors like maternal anxiety and negative attitudes during pregnancy, along with postpartum maternal psychosis, are significant predictors in high-risk offspring.

    Area of Science:

    • Child Psychiatry
    • Developmental Psychology
    • Genetics and Mental Health

    Background:

    • Offspring of mothers with a history of nonorganic psychosis represent a high-risk group for developing mental disturbances.
    • Understanding early-life predictors is crucial for timely intervention and support.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate prospective early-life variables as antecedents of mental disturbance in high-risk offspring at 6 years of age.
    • To compare these antecedents between high-risk offspring and control offspring.

    Main Methods:

    • Longitudinal study tracking offspring from pregnancy to 6 years of age.
    • Prospective investigation of early-life variables including maternal mental health, pregnancy attitudes, and delivery complications.
    • Comparison of findings between a high-risk group (offspring of mothers with psychosis history) and a control group.

    Main Results:

    • In the high-risk group, offspring mental disturbance at 6 years was associated with maternal anxiety during pregnancy, negative maternal attitude, and postpartum maternal psychosis.
    • Other risk factors included low social class, male sex, active maternal mental disturbance during pregnancy, prolonged labor, low Apgar score, neonatal neurological abnormality, and anxious attachment at 1 year.
    • These associations were largely absent in the control group, with low social class being a notable exception.

    Conclusions:

    • Maternal mental health during pregnancy and postpartum, alongside specific early-life and delivery factors, significantly predicts mental disturbance in high-risk offspring.
    • The findings highlight the critical role of the maternal environment in the developmental trajectory of offspring at risk for psychosis.
