Summary

Psoriasis is not linked to thyroid cancer risk in adults overall. However, younger adults and those without hypothyroidism showed an increased risk of thyroid cancer when they also had psoriasis.

  • Multivariable logistic regression analysis assessed the association between psoriasis history and TC, with secondary analyses in various subgroups.

  • Overall, psoriasis was not significantly associated with an increased risk of TC (overlap-weighted OR = 1.02, 95% CI = 0.85−1.22).
  • A significant association was observed in adults younger than 55 years (OR = 1.69, 95% CI = 1.22−2.36).
  • Individuals without hypothyroidism showed an elevated TC risk with psoriasis (OR = 1.29, 95% CI = 1.06−1.57), while those with hypothyroidism had a reduced risk (OR = 0.59, 95% CI = 0.37−0.96).

Conclusions:

  • Psoriasis is not a risk factor for thyroid cancer in the general adult population.
  • Specific subgroups, namely younger adults and individuals without hypothyroidism, may experience an elevated risk of thyroid cancer in the presence of psoriasis.
  • Further research is warranted to elucidate the mechanisms underlying these subgroup-specific associations.
