    Summary

    Radionuclide esophageal transit (RT) is a sensitive, non-invasive screening tool for progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS) patients with esophageal dysfunction. This method detects prolonged transit times and radionuclide stagnation, correlating with disease duration and dysphagia.

    Background:

    • Esophageal dysfunction is a common complication in progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS).
    • Accurate assessment of esophageal motility is crucial for managing PSS patients.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the utility of radionuclide esophageal transit (RT) in assessing esophageal involvement in PSS.
    • To compare the sensitivity of RT with esophageal cineradiography.

    Main Methods:

    • Sixty patients with PSS underwent radionuclide esophageal transit (RT) and esophageal cineradiography.
    • Transit times and radionuclide stagnation were quantified.
    • Correlation analyses were performed with disease duration, dysphagia, and cineradiographic findings.

    Conclusions:

    • Radionuclide esophageal transit (RT) is a sensitive and non-invasive method for evaluating esophageal dysfunction in PSS.
    • RT is more sensitive than cineradiography and can serve as a valuable screening tool for esophageal involvement in PSS.
