Summary

Men with bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) experience significantly reduced sensations of needing to void. A first desire to void (FDV) under 140 mL strongly predicts BOO in men, indicating bladder oversensitivity.

Background:

  • Bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) is a common condition in men, often associated with lower urinary tract symptoms.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the objective association between bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) and abnormal sensation parameters during filling cystometry in men.
  • To determine if specific urodynamic sensation parameters can predict the presence of BOO.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective study including 115 men undergoing urodynamic examination.
  • Patients were categorized into obstructed and unobstructed groups based on the Bladder Outlet Obstruction Index.
  • Evaluations included physical examination, ultrasound, PSA, International Prostate Symptoms Score (IPSS), and filling cystometry.

Main Results:

  • 78% of patients were diagnosed with BOO.
