Severe hypothyroidism can significantly alter a patient's voice due to vocal cord myxedema. Recovery from hypothyroidism often leads to a noticeable improvement in voice quality.

  • Hypothyroidism, a condition of insufficient thyroid hormone production, can manifest with various non-specific symptoms.
  • Vocal changes are not always recognized by patients as a symptom of hypothyroidism.

Observation:

  • A 57-year-old male patient presented with several non-specific complaints.
  • Severe hypothyroidism was diagnosed as the underlying cause of his symptoms.

Findings:

  • The patient's voice changes were attributed to vocal cord myxedema, a swelling of the vocal cords due to fluid accumulation caused by hypothyroidism.
  • Audio recordings demonstrated a profound alteration in voice quality during hypothyroidism and significant improvement post-treatment.
