[Paralytic ileus--pathophysiology and clinical aspects]

Causes, pathophysiological aspects, and clinical manifestations of paralytic ileus are summarised in this paper. Reference is made to possibilities and problems in diagnosis and therapy. Prerequisites and indications for and limits to surgical treatment are discussed.
