    Area of Science:

    • Psychiatry
    • Clinical Psychology

    Background:

    • Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder.
    • Post-psychotic depression can complicate schizophrenia treatment.
    • Long-term outcomes require further investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare schizophrenia patients with and without post-psychotic depression.
    • To identify differences in clinical presentation and treatment history.
    • To analyze long-term outcomes over a 10-year follow-up period.

    Main Methods:

    • A 10-year follow-up study.
    • Comparison between an index group (schizophrenia with post-psychotic depression) and a control group (schizophrenia alone).
    • Analysis of demographic, clinical, and treatment data.

    Main Results:

    • Index group had a significantly older age of schizophrenia onset.
    • Index group experienced more auditory hallucinations.
    • Post-psychotic depression patients had more frequent but shorter hospital admissions.

    Conclusions:

    • Post-psychotic depression in schizophrenia is associated with specific clinical features.
    • Treatment patterns differ, with more frequent but shorter admissions for those with post-psychotic depression.
    • No significant differences were observed in family history of affective disorder or depot neuroleptic treatment parameters.
