Area of Science:
- Maternal and Child Health
- Psychology
- Sociology
Background:
- Antenatal education traditionally focuses on the mother, often overlooking the crucial role of the partner in parental adjustment.
- Preparing couples for childbirth and early parenthood requires comprehensive support addressing both individual and dyadic well-being.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop and assess the feasibility of a novel couple-centered antenatal education program.
- To evaluate the program's impact on parental adjustment, mental health, and relationship dynamics.
Main Methods:
- A preliminary-experimental design involving 33 expectant couples undergoing a four-session program.
- Data collection via validated scales measuring depression, stress, attachment, care confidence, and dyadic adjustment before and after the intervention.
- Intervention conducted at a women's hospital in Daejeon, Korea, from September 2018 to April 2019.
Main Results:
- Significant improvements observed in maternal-fetal attachment and infant care confidence for both partners.
- Reductions in prenatal depression, perceived stress, and fear of childbirth among pregnant women.
- No significant changes were noted in dyadic adjustment scores for either partner.
Conclusions:
- The couple-centered antenatal education program demonstrates effectiveness in enhancing parental preparedness and maternal mental well-being.
- Further research is recommended to explore strategies for positively influencing couple relationship dynamics within antenatal interventions.
