Background:

  • Youth health and development issues are interconnected, yet interventions often lack a holistic, multi-behavioral approach.
  • Existing interventions rarely address multiple behavioral domains simultaneously or adopt comprehensive youth development theories.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To conduct a scoping review of theory-based, multibehavioral health interventions for youth.
  • To identify and describe interventions targeting at least two of four key behavioral domains: sexual/reproductive health, education/employment, violence, and substance use.

Main Methods:

  • Searched four databases (PubMed, PsycINFO, LILACS, SciELO) for interventions published between January 2000 and July 2020.
  • Included interventions conducted globally, published in English or Spanish.
  • Screened 11,084 articles, with 23 articles (evaluating 21 interventions) meeting inclusion criteria.

Main Results:

  • Most interventions (21) were from the United States, primarily addressing two behavioral domains.
  • Substance use (16 interventions) and sexual/reproductive health (14 interventions) were the most common domains addressed.
  • All interventions demonstrated significant improvements in at least one outcome or subgroup, utilizing positive youth development and social learning theories.

Conclusions:

  • Theory-based, integrated interventions effectively promote positive youth development and healthy choices.
  • Addressing structural and policy factors is crucial for improving youth health and developmental opportunities.
