Enhancing Clinical Judgment in Managing Postpartum Hemorrhage: A Replication Study

Background Clinical judgment is one of the crucial skills necessary for nurses to practice safely and support positive patient outcomes. Inpatient nurse educators often seek engaging and meaningful methods of providing important learning to bedside nurses. Method A game-based learning (GBL) activity, originally created to enhance clinical judgment in the management of post-partum hemorrhage (PPH) for undergraduate nursing students, was replicated for RNs' continuing education on an obstetric unit. Results Although less remarkable than undergraduate students' scores, RNs' scores improved significantly (p < .05) for every aspect of the clinical judgment model applied to PPH (recognition, analysis, action, evaluation) from pre- to posttest after using the GBL activity. Conclusion GBL is effective for enhancing the clinical judgment ability of RNs for specific topics such as PPH and can be utilized to support education across a continuum of expertise for those in, or preparing for, direct patient care.
