Background:

Addressing gender disparity is vital for expanding the advanced practice nursing (APN) workforce.
Investigating low male recruitment into APN programs is critical.
Examining potential gender bias in nursing professional development is necessary.

Purpose of the Study:

To explore perceptions of registered nurses and APNs regarding male recruitment into the APN workforce.
To understand barriers and facilitators for men entering and remaining in advanced practice nursing roles.

Main Methods:

Descriptive qualitative design.
Semi-structured interviews conducted via Zoom from April to August 2021.

Main Results:

Three key themes emerged: 'The odds are eventually in the favour of men', 'The APN career-track is unpopular among men', and 'Balancing the gender gap in the APN workforce'.
All themes were supported by three subthemes, providing nuanced insights into male participation.

Conclusions:

Men may have advantages entering the APN workforce but show low interest and retention.
Nurse managers need awareness of gender stereotypes to provide unbiased career counseling and appraisals.
Strategies are needed to improve male engagement and retention in advanced practice nursing.
