Background:

  • Aphasia, a communication disorder resulting from brain damage, requires accurate severity assessment for effective treatment.
  • Comprehensive aphasia test batteries are time-consuming and resource-intensive.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To introduce and validate the Severity-Calibrated Aphasia Naming Test (SCANT) as a proxy for aphasia severity.
  • To establish the SCANT's reliability and validity against established aphasia measures.

Main Methods:

  • Developed a 20-item SCANT from a larger set of 174 pictures using lasso regression.
  • Validated the SCANT with 200 participants with left-hemisphere stroke and 20 healthy controls.
  • Assessed interrater reliability, test-retest reliability, sensitivity, specificity, and external validity.
