    Summary

External pneumatic intermittent compression (EPIC) significantly reduced leg edema in pregnant women. EPIC provided greater leg volume reduction compared to posturing alone, even after ambulation.

    Area of Science:

    • Obstetrics and Gynecology
    • Vascular Physiology
    • Edema Management

    Background:

    • Dependent leg edema is common in pregnancy.
    • Effective non-pharmacological interventions are needed.
    • External pneumatic intermittent compression (EPIC) is a potential treatment.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the effects of EPIC plus posturing versus posturing alone on leg volume in pregnant women with edema.
    • To evaluate the efficacy of EPIC in reducing leg volume changes.

    Main Methods:

    • 35 healthy pregnant women with severe pedal edema were randomized into two groups.
    • Experimental group received 30 minutes of EPIC (40 torr) in left lateral recumbent position.
    • Control group received only left lateral posturing, followed by 10 minutes of walking for both groups.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Main Results:

    • The EPIC group showed significantly greater leg volume loss immediately after posturing (Time 2).
    • While some volume loss reversed by Time 3 (post-ambulation), the EPIC group's reduction remained greater than controls.
    • Control group's leg volume did not change significantly between Time 2 and Time 3.

    Conclusions:

    • EPIC is an effective intervention for reducing leg edema in pregnant women.
    • EPIC provides a significant benefit over posturing alone for managing leg volume.
    • Ponderal index was identified as a significant covariate influencing volume changes.
