    Background:

    • Dry skin (xerosis) is common in the elderly.
    • A prevailing belief links aging-related decreased sebaceous gland activity to elderly dry skin.
    • This belief lacks empirical testing.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the association between sebum secretion and dry skin in the elderly.
    • To explore other external variables contributing to dry skin in this demographic.
    • To challenge or confirm the common assumption about sebum and aging skin.

    Main Methods:

    • Study included 76 elderly individuals (65-97 years) from retirement homes.
    • Dry skin assessed via self-report and clinical observation.
    • Sebum secretion measured using quantitative thin-layer chromatography.
    • Other relevant factors collected through structured interviews.

    • 59% of subjects exhibited dry skin.
    • Mean sebum secretion rate was 0.534 mg/10 sq cm/3 hr.
