Nitrogen dioxide exposure and development of pulmonary emphysema
Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) inhalation did not worsen existing lung emphysema in rats. This study found that NO2 exposure alone does not cause emphysema and does not accelerate protease-induced lung damage.

- Subchronic, moderately high NO2 exposure does not induce irreversible emphysema in rats.
- NO2 exposure does not potentiate protease-induced emphysema or accelerate its progression.
