Summary

The first study in Spain to calculate forensic autopsy costs found the average price to be €1501.45. This analysis of resources helps optimize forensic pathology services for better efficiency.

Background:

Autopsies are crucial for death investigation, requiring significant resources.
Efficient resource allocation is necessary to meet judicial demands.
The cost of forensic autopsies in Spain was previously undetermined.

Purpose of the Study:

To estimate the cost of a standard forensic autopsy in Spain.
To provide data for more efficient organization of Forensic Pathology Services.

Main Methods:

A micro-cost analysis was performed.
The nominal group technique involved 10 forensic experts.
Resources associated with forensic autopsies were identified and quantified.

Main Results:

Analysis and studies constituted the largest cost component (54.7%).
Staff costs accounted for 20.5% of the total.
The total estimated cost for a standard autopsy is €1501.45.

Conclusions:

This study provides the first unit price for forensic autopsies in Spain using micro-cost analysis.
The calculated cost is below the European average.
Findings can inform the organization of forensic pathology centers at various complexity levels.
