Most Norwegians know dementia risk reduction is possible, but knowledge gaps exist for cardiovascular and metabolic factors. Tailored interventions are needed to address differing beliefs and attitudes towards dementia prevention.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Neurology
- Gerontology
Background:
- Dementia risk reduction is linked to modifiable lifestyle factors.
- Public awareness of these links in Norway is not well understood.
Purpose of the Study:
- Investigate Norwegian public's knowledge of dementia risk and protective factors.
- Assess beliefs and attitudes towards dementia and risk reduction.
Main Methods:
- Surveyed 1435 Norwegians aged 40-70 using online questionnaires.
- Measured dementia risk reduction awareness and motivation to change behavior (MOCHAD-10).
Main Results:
- 70% recognized dementia risk reduction potential.
- Physical inactivity (86%), cognitive inactivity (84%), and social isolation (80%) were known risks.
- Cardiovascular (diabetes 26%, heart disease 19%) and kidney disease risks were less recognized.
Conclusions:
- General awareness of dementia risk reduction is high (70%).
- Significant knowledge gaps exist regarding cardiovascular and metabolic risk factors.
- Tailored interventions are necessary, considering age, gender, and education differences in attitudes.
